Historic Bakeries In Puerto Rico Are Still Baking Bread. Here’s How To Find Them.
One bakery has been operating and baking its titillatingly-named bread in the town of Morovis since 1862.
It’s hard to find good bread in Puerto Rico. Even the bread that’s considered “good,” is really an “in comparison” situation. “Good” is subjective. The type of bread I prefer is usually sourdough, formed into a pullman-shaped loaf and cut into slices. This type of bread can be hard to track down on the island. The type of bread I’m used to is the kind I grew up on; industrialized white and “wheat” Wonder Bread from the Hostess factory. This type of bread is rampant in Puerto Rico. There are still bakeries on the island where you can find a variety of freshly baked loaves of bread. Some of the bakeries, and the bread recipes themselves, have been around since the mid 1800s. Here’s a list of some of the more obscure bread shapes that are mostly unknown outside of Puerto Rico and where to find them.
