Interesting how I found this substack searching for Steak a la Chicana specifically before 1980.

I was born and raised in Fat City/Stockton late 60s through 80s. ALL the Mexican restaurants served their version of “Chicana” from hole in the wall joints to the larger white linen places in and around San Joaquin County back then.

Abuela made her own as well which as a kid I thought was a little tougher than the restaurante fare.

Mi Ranchito and Arroyos down in 70s skidrow were two of our regular haunts for a family meal.

I can hear an El Rey song in the background and smell the fresh no microwave cooking sounds going on in the kitchen almost like it was 50 years ago.

Thanks for the leg work on painting in this vivid chapter of my youth.
