Thanks for the interesting story! I grew up in Fresno where persimmons were plentiful. My uncle still makes an old recipe we all shared for spiced persimmon cookies during Thanksgiving and Christmas and I look forward to them every year. When I left California I was amazed to learn that so few people outside of that area seem to even know what they are!

I know! There has to be some native fruits around the US that I don't know about; like pawpaws

Lovely photos and story. Received a box of Fuyu persimmons from friends in Elk Grove a week ago. Shared with friends here, and I still have enough for thanksgiving kale salad.

Have always wanted to try hoshigaki - I can see why they are such a rare treat! Thank you for sharing the Otow Farm family history; it is so important to understand the resilience and dedication involved. We shouldn't take any of these bounties and the people who work so hard for granted.

Never tried a persimmon! As for the book signing event... that is wild. If the people booking you aren't going to be paying then how come everyone expects you to foot the bill to make it happen? You can't sign a book through zoom but at least zoom is a free space to meet and talk?

To be honest I've only ever tried to get one book in my life signed and that was by E.O. Wilson. I happened to be in DC when he was there giving a talk and signing books. It was at the National Museum of Natural History. I feel like those people probably paid him to be there though and the event was free to the public but you had to sign up. I don't think places should be trying to book people without paying them. I feel like places act like the exposure is their gift to you... or something else. But really, you just need to be compensated for your time and energy.

Love persimmons! Hope to check out their farm, and thanks for sharing about them and their history. And bummer about your canceled flight and continued hurdles. *Southwest does fly direct to Burbank but limited flights each day. Hope for some positive, good things in store for u!
